Many people come to Tenerife for the resorts, but for the travel adventurer, the island provides some of the best hiking in Europe.
The best areas to hike are the most ancient parts of the island, which include the far north-west (Teno Rural Park), the far north-east (Anaga Rural Park), and the middle (Adeje). The Teide national park, just above Adeje, is also worth hiking for the tallest mountain in Spain, as well as some otherworldly landscape and vulcan rock formtations.
Geologicaly speaking, the Teno region is the most important, as it contains the most rare birds, plants, and animals, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Hiking in Teno involves lush tropical forests, rolling green hills, cactus-scattered red earth, mysetrious black caves (which used to host people), and a dozen other different landscapes that change completely at every turn of the road. The town of los SIlos provides a good base for hiking, as it is the start of many routes going up towards the mountain towns of Los Erjos, Los Parajaros, and Teino alto.
