#NInjaVerdict: Is Philadelphia America’s Most Underrated City Break Destination?

Why Philadelphia?  One of Philadelphia’s greatest advantages is its location. Situated approximately 90 miles south-west of New York City, flight times are almost identical. Direct flights typically take around 6.5 hours across and can be as little as 5.5 hours on the return journey with favourable winds!

There are currently two airlines that fly direct from Dublin as well – Aer Lingus and American Airlines – so prices can be very competitive at times with base / entry fares as low as £300 per person return.

Accommodation is another area where Philadelphia shines. Hotel rates are generally far more affordable than those in New York, with prices sometimes coming in at half the cost of comparable properties in the Big Apple. Whether you’re looking for a stylish boutique hotel or a well-known international chain, there are options to suit every budget.

Easy to Explore –  Unlike many major US cities, Philadelphia is exceptionally walkable. Visitors can comfortably explore many of the city’s key districts on foot, making it easy to discover attractions while getting plenty of steps in along the way! For longer journeys (or if the feet are a little sore) the subway and other public transport are readily available, and rideshare services such as Uber provide a convenient alternative.

 History – Philadelphia is one of America’s most historic cities and played a central role in the nation’s founding. Visitors can walk the same streets as the Founding Fathers, tour Independence Hall—where the Declaration of Independence was signed—and view the world-famous Liberty Bell, an enduring symbol of freedom.

 Arts & Culture –  While many visitors recognise Philadelphia for its iconic LOVE sculpture and Rocky statue, the city’s cultural offering extends far beyond these landmarks.

The Benjamin Franklin Parkway is home to several of Philadelphia’s most celebrated institutions, including the Barnes Foundation, the Rodin Museum, the Franklin Institute and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Together, they create one of the most impressive cultural corridors in the United States.

Shopping –  Whether you’re searching for luxury brands, unique boutiques or bargain finds, Philadelphia offers an excellent shopping experience. From the expansive Fashion District in downtown Philadelphia to the independent stores throughout Center City, there is no shortage of retail opportunities.  Food & Drink –  Philadelphia’s culinary scene remains one of America’s most underrated. The city offers an impressive mix of award-winning restaurants, innovative chef-led concepts and long-established local favourites. Of course, no visit would be complete without trying a traditional Philly Cheesesteak. And if there’s one piece of advice we can offer, it’s this: the messier the cheesesteak, the better it usually tastes!!

 Film & Popular Culture – Philadelphia has featured prominently in popular culture for decades, serving as the backdrop for television series such as Cold Case and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as blockbuster films including Silver Linings Playbook and The Sixth Sense. However, no cinematic connection is more iconic than Rocky. For many visitors, running up the famous Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a must-do experience.

And if you are a US SPORTS  fan, then its hard to beat Philadelphia for choice and ease of access – its one of very few US cities that have all their main sports teams (Ice Hockey, Baseball, Basketball and American Football) ALL in the one area close together. Atlantic City, located on the New Jersey shoreline, can be reached by direct train in approximately 90 minutes, with return fares often available for around $30. Alternatively, if New York City is still on your mind, Amtrak services connect Philadelphia and New York direct, with no changes, in around 90 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day.
